Straat Tenney counsels clients on an array of intellectual property matters, including U.S. and international trademark portfolio management, trademark clearance and enforcement and anti-counterfeiting actions. Straat's domestic and international clients range from major manufacturing companies to startups in such industries as food, cosmetics and luxury brands. He has also represented U.S. and international clients before the federal district courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Straat's domestic and international clients range from major manufacturing companies to startups in such industries as food, cosmetics and luxury brands. He has also represented U.S. and international clients before the federal district courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Prior to joining the Firm, Straat was trained as a law clerk in the trademark and copyright litigation group of another New York firm. Before that, Straat worked in-house at two separate multinational corporations in the apparel and consumer products industries, focusing in intellectual property and business law. During law school, Straat coached and participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Vienna, Austria.

Straat's representative experience includes:

  • Obtained monetary judgment against counterfeiter of famous trade dress for pocket knives
  • Obtained favorable settlement for a large manufacturer of watches in a federal trademark infringement and dilution action
  • Performed due diligence for the purchase of a consumer food company and personal care products company
  • Managed discovery in federal lawsuits and drafted pleadings, motions, and briefs in administrative and federal courts
  • Negotiated and drafted co-existence and settlement agreements
  • Counseled client with respect to applications for mobile devices and drafted privacy policies, terms of use, user codes of conduct and DMCA policies
  • Managed international policing programs for clients' famous brands, including advice on initiating opposition and cancelation actions and implementing foreign filing programs
  • Assisted several startup companies in selecting, clearing and registering trademarks, avoiding potential future problems before significant investment was made while ensuring the clients were protected from potential infringers
  • Defended a client's domain name from reverse domain name hijacking and persuaded the arbitration panel to find the other side had brought the action in bad faith
