Chicago Team Serves as Pro Bono Representation of Consumers in Lawsuit Against Furry Babies Pet Store Chain

Locke Lord, along with co-counsel from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), recently reached a settlement in a pro bono consumer lawsuit against Furry Babies, Inc., a Chicago-area pet store chain. Consumers claimed that the Furry Babies chain violated consumer protection laws by selling sick puppy mill puppies to customers. Under the settlement agreement, the pet store will now have to verify the specific source of each puppy and breeders must have no serious Animal Welfare Act violations. In addition, the store will be required to provide veterinary reports on dogs and the breeder’s last USDA inspection report upon request. Financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
